Lori Shyba

In no particular order, I have been a web/graphic/game designer, journalist, video producer, magazine publisher, advertising art director, TV talent, dancer/choreographer, digital art curator, university professor, theatre impresario, creative director of Sundial Media, and cowgirl among other things. My MFA is in performance and multimedia from the University of Calgary, Department of Drama, Theatre Studies. My recently completed PhD dissertation, called "Beyond Fun and Games," is about the way Interactive Media can help us better understand social issues. Among my recent artistic endeavors is the forum theatre event Spies in the Oil Sands, and its spin-off computer game “The Pipeline Pinball Energy Thrill Ride Game” which mix live improvisational drama with screen-delivered intermedia and games, peppered with audience participation, and served on a bed of subversive humour. "The Booze Cruise," another serious game I helped develop with Jim Parker's team at the Digital Media Lab in Calgary, has recently been licensed for use by the US Department of Defense. I am also interested in cultural aspects of human-computer interaction (HCI), play in social network environments, and research adventures in far-away corners of the world.  I am currently on contract with McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario where I teach in the Department of Communications and Multimedia in the Faculty of Humanities.
