Messaging in the Noosphere investigates ways that human-computer interaction (HCI) and integrated electronic media can offer innovative support to the creation of theatre art. Components of this research were a performance event, staged in January 2004, a web site service, a documentary filmic DVD, and a typeset script. Set amid a scenography of hanging crystal doorknobs and cellular phone “input devices” and centrepieced by a huge plasma display screen, the script narrative is about a family who builds a three-dimensional computer environment in their media room to play immersive games of Adventure, Prosperity, and Enlightenment.Communicating a connection between theatrical performance, media art, and computer science, this research project provides an example of how artists can serve to frame science and technology in a context that gives meaning to the monumental change in our society as a result of humans and computers interacting.
